Millions of Americans lack adequate access to primary health care and this is only expected to get worse as time goes on. There are large areas of the United States that have been designated as Medically Underserved Areas. These are areas that have too few primary care providers, high infant mortality, high poverty, and a high elderly population. These areas are not receiving the health care that they deserve and pharmacists are conveniently accessible health care professionals who, in coordination with other health care providers, are capable of playing a greater role in the delivery of health care services. There are current two bills in Congress that would give Provider Status to pharmacists in Medically Underserved Communities, which surprisingly cover a large portion of the United States.
